Description
Tender chicken breasts layered with savory ham and Swiss cheese, slow-cooked in a rich, creamy sauce and finished with an optional buttery breadcrumb topping for an easy, comforting take on classic Chicken Cordon Bleu.
Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 8 slices ham
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- For the sauce:
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- Optional topping:
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
Instructions
1. Season both sides of the chicken breasts with salt and black pepper.
2. Place the chicken in a single even layer in the slow cooker.
3. Lay two slices of ham over each chicken breast.
4. Top the ham with one slice of Swiss cheese per breast.
5. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the cream of chicken soup, heavy cream, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.
6. Pour the sauce evenly over the chicken so each piece is well coated.
7. If using, sprinkle breadcrumbs evenly over the top.
8. Cover and cook on LOW for 5–6 hours or on HIGH for 3–4 hours, until the chicken is tender and cooked through.
9. Turn off the slow cooker and let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
Notes
For even cooking, trim chicken breasts to a similar thickness.
Ham and cheese add salt, so season lightly at the start.
Breadcrumbs should be added only at the beginning if you don’t mind them soft; add at the end and broil briefly for crunch if desired.
This dish is excellent served over rice, pasta, or mashed potatoes.
